UA Students Win Chapter Award, Prepare Outreach Event

Oct. 17, 2013

The UA chapter of the American Indian Science and Engineering Society has been recognized by its national association.

AISES opened its 2013Fall Video Competition with the prompt, "What AISES means to Me," encouraging members to submit their testimonials. The UA chapter won the competition, also taking the $200 prize.

Also, the UA chapter is preparing for the AISES Geosciences Research Colloquium, which is being held Oct. 19. For the day-long program, AISES students partnered with the Native American Science and Engineering Program (NASEP) to host workshops, lab tours, presentations and a research poster session that are specific to the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields.

In the videos, students talk about what meaning they take from their involvement in AISES.

UA AISES chapter president Jordan Jimmie, who is studying environmental hydrology and water resources, said his involvement help him to "to push myself academically, whether through networking, professional developing or seeking internships; being outside of my comfort zone in a leadership position in order to lift people up and encourage them to pursue theri educational endeavors and reach their potential."

AISES was founded to improve the representation of American Indians and Alaskan Natives in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. Nationwide, the association supports students, professionals, mentors and leaders and also promotes and initiates programs designed to support students before and after they enter a college or university.
